Translating Children’s & Young Adult Literature:

A Hands-on Workshop

In this hands-on workshop we will learn about the challenges and joys of translating children’s and YA literature.

In the first part of the workshop we will look at common problems encountered when translating YA and how they are solved. We will talk about the evolution of language used by teens. Depending on the literary trend – think dystopian worlds and fantasy novels – the abundance of made-up words can be overwhelming. Poems, riddles, and songs tend to appear generously in YA literature. We will also explore the possibility of splitting a book between two or three translators.

In the second part of the workshop Aïda will provide English originals for you to translate. Participants will work individually or in pairs to translate into a target language of their choice. You will have the chance to present your work to the rest of the group and get feedback from the instructor.

To conclude Aïda will talk about getting your foot into literary translation and specifically into the world of children’s and YA books.

Translators of any language are welcome to attend. Participants should bring their laptop. We hope you have a fun and creative time.

A native of Barcelona, Aïda holds a degree in Interpreting & Translation from Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and combines her two professional passions: teaching the joys of a foreign language and literary translation. She has taught English in England, Bangladesh and China, and has translated over 40 young adult and children’s books from English into Catalan. These books include, amongst others, vampires (Claudia Gray’s Evernight series), dystopian worlds (the Divergent, Insurgent, Allegiant by Veronica Roth) and, more recently, the Internet social media craze (Zoella’s Girl Online and Jeanne Ryan’s Nerve).

Aïda translates from English, Italian and Spanish into Catalan and vice versa.

When not translating from a neighborhood café or teaching Spanish to kids at school, she can be found reading in a cozy corner at home with her children.

ATA Continuing Education Credit: ATA-certified members will earn four Continuing Education points.

Early payment is advised in order to secure participation and help reach the workshop minimum participation. Unfortunately, workshops may occasionally have to be cancelled or rescheduled if the confirmed participation in advance is very low. NCTA will not be responsible for any consequential losses to participants arising from this.

Cancellation policy: Refunds are issued only if notice of cancellation is received one week prior to the applicable workshop date. A cancellation fee of $10 is charged to all cancellations.
